The major gathering where Steve Jobs held his keynote address to the rest of the world scheduled to take place in January 2009 will be the last one. Moreover, it seems Steve will not be hosting it.
Whilst Apple preaches the event's obsolete necessity, the general consumer and critics are associating it to a sick Steve Jobs...
"...the times are a changing..." as Bob Dylan sang.

Hmm.. that's a very strange move from Apple, to say the least!
MacWorld has always been a major launch platform for Apple products: The iMac, iPod, iPhone, you name it, all were introduced at MacWorld expo. I remember the day of the iPhone announcement they even showed parts of the keynote on the 20:00 news. What better way of publicity could Apple have for their new products?!?! the whole world was watching these keynotes. And always a great piece of entertainment from Mr. Jobs as well. :P
Maybe they will just (pod)cast recorded keynotes or product launches instead, I simply cannot imagine Apple stopping with these.
Some say it also has to do with the fact that every MacWorld, Apple has to come with a new feature or product. This puts a lot of pressure on the developers and designers. Basically they can't handle this pressure. Look at products like MobileMe and Apple TV. Introduced too fast and are far from 100%.
